The Philippine Flag was first unfurled on June 12, 1898, when Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence from Spanish rule. It was designed by Aguinaldo and sewn by Marcela Agoncillo in Hongkong where some of the Filipino patriots live in self-exile.

The white triangle stands for equality
The upper blue stripe for peace, and the lower red stripe for patriotism,
The sun symbolizes independence while eight rays represent the first eight provinces that let the revolution against Spain.
The three stars stand for the three geographical divisions  of the county, namely LUZON, VISAYAS AND MINDANAO Banned by the Americans after the suppression of the republic, the flag was revived at the established of the Philippine Commonwealth. It again became the national flag at the end of American rule in 1946.
